a passion for perfection

The more you understand your pet's nutritional needs the more it makes sence.

Dogs

As our knowledge of the relationship between diet and health continues to advance and as the range of foods available for dogs continues to expand, it becomes more important than ever to base feeding choices on good information.

Dogs need several different kinds of nutrients to survive: amino acids from protein, fatty acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water. Your dog's unique nutritional requirements will depend on its size, breed type, activity level, and its stage of life among other factors. A better understanding of how dogs use these various nutrients in food and how much they need can help you choose a healthier diet for your pet.

Protein and Amino Acids

Dogs cannot survive without protein in their diet. Dietary protein contains 10 specific amino acids that dogs cannot make on their own. Known as essential amino acids, they provide the building blocks for many important biologically active compounds and proteins. In addition, they donate the carbon chain needed to make glucose for energy. The high quality proteins used in Mother Nature's Recipes products have an excellent balance of all the essential amino acids. Dogs are known to selectively choose foods that are high in protein. Whether this is simply a matter of taste or a complex response to their biological need for all 10 essential amino acids is not known, but we tend to think the later. Studies show that dogs can tell when their food lacks a single amino acid and they avoid such a meal.

Fats and Fatty Acids

Dietary fats, mainly derived from animal fats and the seed oil from various plants, provide the most concentrated source of energy in the diet. They supply essential fatty acids that cannot be synthesized in the body and serve as carriers of important oil soluble vitamins. Food fats tend to enhance the taste and texture of dog's food as well. At Mother Nature's Recipes we strive to provide your dogs with unprocessed fats from a multitude of natural sources.

Why Feed Raw Food

As our knowledge of the relationship between diet and health continues to advance, it's more important than ever to base feeding choices on good information. Veterinarians and pet nutritionists have come to realize that a raw diet containing meats, vegetables, and fruits provide and optimum diet for dogs. Dry and canned pet foods are made in such a way that most of their nutritional values is destroyed. Cooking and processing eliminate many of the vital nutrients pets require to maintain their health and well-being.

Feeding

It is important that you serve Mother Nature's Recipes raw food when it is completely thawed yet still cold to the touch. It is best to thaw the product in your refrigerator overnight. Never microwave any product. Microwaves cause the fat molecules to change, making the fats less digestible. Mother Nature's Recipes products can be used in conjunction with a high quality dry dog food.

Portions:

Because of increased nutrient density and increased digestibility you are able to feed less food daily when compared to non-raw food diets. We suggest that you start by feeding your pet approximately 2-3% of its body weight for an adult dog and 4-8% for a puppy per day. An example might be a 30 pound adult dog should receive approximately 3/4 to 1 pound of food per day. A 10 pound puppy should receive anywhere from a 1/2 pound to 1 pound of food per day. We recommend feeding adult pets twice daily and puppies 3 to 4 times daily. Please keep in mind that our feeding guidelines are just estimates. Factors such as levels of activity, age, breed, and health all play a part in determining the quantity of food your pet requires.

Food Safety Guidelines

At Mother Nature's Recipes the health an well-being of your pet is our primary concern. Whether it be our meticulous manufacturing practices, quality control and assurance programs, or food safety standards, every phase of our operation is closely monitored.
